Nutmeg Sports, HAN’s Connecticut sport show, airs Monday-Thursday at 2 pm on HAN.Network, hosted by Frank Granito, Kevin Coleman, Eric Gendron and various HAN sports editors.
On the Wednesday, June 7, episode of Nutmeg Sports our hosts look back at Tuesday’s action from the Class L girls lacrosse state tournament. Featuring four FCIAC schools, the HAN Network was live at Brien McMahon to see No. 11 Wilton take on No. 2 Greenwich and No. 4 Darien vs No. 8 New Canaan.
First up, Frank, Kevin and Eric break down the Wilton Warriors 14-8 upset over the 2nd seeded Greenwich Cardinals. Led offensively by freshman Sophia Sudano and a stellar performance in cage by junior goalie Paige Brown Wilton advanced to their first state championship game since 2015. Senior Rebecca Wistreich added 6 points on 3 goals and 3 assists, as the Warriors get ready to play in their 5th state championship in 6 years.
Next up we look at who Wilton will be playing, Darien and New Canaan took their rivalry to the state tournament for the first time since 2014 as the Rams moved up from class M to class L. Again Darien got the best of their next door neighbors as the Wave jumped out to an 11-3 lead at one point in the first half and were able to cruise to a 20-10 victory. Katie Ramsey was dominant in the draw circle, Carly Schoudel made 9 saves and Christine Fiore torched NC again with 6 goals to lead the way offensively.
Finally we look ahead to Wednesday’s state tournament action featuring 5 FCIAC schools, 3 of which are playing in the Class LL baseball semifinals.
