Ten Fairfield County student-athletes have been nominated by our sports editors and broadcasters for the HAN-FCIAC Athletes of Week 2 of the 2018 spring sports season— sponsored by OrthoConnecticut. Check out the nominees and vote for your picks.
The week 1 winners were Trinadey Santiago of the Danbury softball team and Matthew Tiplady of the Stamford baseball team.
The week 2 winners (voting will be open until Sunday, April 22, at 11:59 pm) will be announced on Coffee Break on Monday, April 23 at 11 a.m. on HAN.Network.
HAN-FCIAC Male Athlete of the Week Nominees
Brian Minicus, Darien boys lacrosse
Minicus’s goal with 52.7 seconds to play lifted Darien to a 7-6 victory over Manhassett (N.Y.) and extended the Blue Wave’s winning streak to 59 games. Minicus led the Wave with three goals and an assist against the Indians.
Jack DeFrancesco, New Canaan baseball
DeFrancesco pitched six innings and allowed just one unearned run on three singles as the Rams’ defeated Greenwich 2-1 as part of a doubleheader sweep last Wednesday. The New Canaan pitcher walked one and struck out four just two days after pitching three scoreless innings of relief against Danbury.
Brendan Skewis, Wilton baseball
Skewis, a senior, was 3-for-4 at the plate in Wilton’s 5-4 win over Norwalk on Wednesday, including the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth. On Friday, Skewis hurled a complete-game four-hitter in the Warriors’ 6-1 win over New Canaan. He also pitched two innings of scoreless relief, not allowing a hit, in the team’s loss at Westhill on Monday.
Jake DeLeo, St. Joseph baseball
DeLeo had two hits and drove in four runs in a 17-3 win over Trinity Catholic. He had two RBIs and a pair of doubles later in the week, as the Cadets improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the FCIAC with a 9-4 win over Norwalk.
Chad Knight, Staples baseball
Knight went 3 for 5 with a double and a triple, a runs scored, and four RBI’s in the Wreckers 10-4 victory over Warde on Friday. Knight was also 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs in an 8-2 win over Danbury on Wednesday. Staples continues their strong start as they are 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the FCIAC.
HAN-FCIAC Female Athlete of the Week Nominees
Olivia Vadas, Fairfield Warde softball
Vadas struck out 11 batters when Warde defeated Staples, 11-2. She had a double and scored a run for the Mustangs, now 3-2. Vadas earlier pitched a three-hitter and struck out nine in a 12-2 win over Ridgefield.
Dina DiBlasio, Norwalk softball
DiBlasio hit two home runs — a grand slam and a two-run shot — when the Bears defeated Wilton 9-5.
Brittany Mairano, St. Joseph softball
Mairano a freshmen hit a grand slam to help lead the Cadets to an 8-2 victory over the Norwalk Bears on Friday. The Cadets improve to a 4-1 overall and are 3-0 in the FCIAC.
Stefani Gentile, Darien softball
Gentile went 4-for-5 with 7 RBIs, including two on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh, as the Blue Wave defeated Fryeburg Academy from Maine, 13-12, on Sunday. Gentile was 2-for-2 with a triple, single and 4 RBIs when Darien scored 10 runs in the final two innings.
Gillian Kane, New Canaan softball
Kane went 3-for-3 with a pair of triples, and also picked up the pitching win as New Canaan topped Wilton, 6-4, in Waveny Park on Friday. Kane pitched the full seven innings and allowed three earned runs while striking out 13. She also scored a run and had one RBI.
