Eight Fairfield County student-athletes have been nominated by our sports editors and broadcasters for the HAN-FCIAC Athletes of Week 3 of the 2018 spring sports season— sponsored by OrthoConnecticut. Check out the nominees and vote for your picks.
The week 2 winners were Brittany Mairano of the St. Joseph softball team and Jack Defrancesco of New Canaan baseball.
The week 3 winners (voting will be open until Sunday, April 29, at 11:59 pm) will be announced on Coffee Break on Monday, April 30 at 11 a.m. on HAN.Network.
HAN-FCIAC Male Athlete of the Week Nominees
Ben Fero, Trumbull baseball
Fero allowed only four hits and struck out 12 batters when the Eagles handed top-ranked Staples its first loss of the season by winning an 8-2 decision last Wednesday.
Aidan Wykoff, Fairfield Ludlowe boys lacrosse
Wykoff led the offense last week for the Falcons. Against Kennedy Catholic (N.Y.) he scored six goals and had an assist in a 15-8 victory last Tuesday. He had three goals and two assists in Friday’s 15-0 victory over Trinity Catholic. On Saturday, he scored twice and assisted on two other netfinders in a 13-1 win over Brien McMahon.
Noah Isaacson, Ridgefield boys lacrosse
Although he didn’t score any goals, Isaacson was a huge factor in Ridgefield’s 12-7 win over Wilton. Isaacson led a defensive effort that held Wilton scoreless for the second and third quarters. Issacson was responsible defensively for the future Duke Blue Devil, Connor Drake, holding the junior to just one goal.
John MacDonald, Westhill baseball
MacDonald pitched a five-inning perfect game in Westhill’s 10-0 win over Danbury. MacDonald allowed no hits or walks and struck out three batters.
HAN-FCIAC Female Athlete of the Week Nominees
Libby McKenna, Fairfield Warde girls lacrosse
The senior McKenna had a big week as the Mustangs won 2 out of 3 games. She racked up 14 points, eight goals and six assists, in Warde’s wins over Staples and Trumbull.
Eva Greco, Wilton girls lacrosse
Senior Eva Greco scored seven goals, including the game-winner with 44 seconds remaining in the first overtime, in Wilton’s 12-11 win over Greenwich on Friday.
Emily Gell, Trumbull softball
A sophomore, Gell held Staples to three hits and struck out 10 in a win over the Wreckers on Wednesday. She had two doubles and drove in three runs. She then pitched a one-hitter, with one walk and eight strikeouts, when Trumbull defeated Ludlowe 3-1 on Friday.
Ashley Humphrey, Darien girls lacrosse
Humphrey powered the Blue Wave offense five goals helping Darien defeat Long Beach (N.Y.) 14-7 on Saturday afternoon.
