Eight Fairfield County student-athletes have been nominated by our sports editors and broadcasters for the HAN-FCIAC Athletes of Week 5 of the 2018 spring sports season— sponsored by OrthoConnecticut. Check out the nominees and vote for your picks.
The week four winners were Jack Jones of the Trumbull track and field team and Cat Connell of the St. Joseph softball team.
The week 5 winners (voting will be open until Sunday, May 13, at 11:59 pm) will be announced on Coffee Break on Monday, May 14 at 11 a.m. on HAN.Network.
HAN-FCIAC Male Athlete of the Week Nominees
Sean Knight, New Canaan track & field
Knight won the 110-meter hurdles race and was second in the 300 hurdles at Saturday’s Middletown Invitational track and field meet. Knight was first at 110 meters with a time of 15.27 seconds, and at 300 meters, he finished in 41.95, just off the pace of 41.85 set by Manchester’s Shawn Akomeah
Quinn McDonald, Ridgefield baseball
McDonald went 8-for-11 with six runs scored and eight RBIs last week, helping the Ridgefield Tigers sweep four opponents, including three FCIAC playoff contenders Wilton, Darien and St. Joseph. His hits included a double, triple and a home run, and four of his RBIs came in a 6-2 win over Darien on Thursday.
Randy Mateo, Norwalk baseball
Mateo knocked in Norwalk’s first four runs in their 5-4 win over Brien McMahon on Saturday. He had a two-run single in the first, a solo home run in the fourth, and an RBI single in in the fifth.
Hadyn Gourley, St. Joseph baseball
Gourley allowed Westhill only a seventh-inning single in pitching the Cadets to a 6-0 win. Gourley struck out nine batters.
HAN-FCIAC Female Athlete of the Week Nominees
Kim Saunders, Stamford softball
The freshman did it all this week going 3-0 on the mound including a perfect game in an 8-0 victory over Staples. Saunders struck out eight in that game vs the Wreckers. Kim also took care of business at the plate going 3-3 on Saturday with 2 HRs and 4 RBIs in the Black Knights win vs Warde.
Lilly Ma, Darien girls tennis
Ma, the Wave’s No. 1 singles player, won two huge matches as Darien knocked off FCIAC contenders Staples and New Canaan last week. In a rematch of last year’s FCIAC final last Tuesday, Darien defeated Staples 5-2 with Ma scoring a 6-3, 6-2 win over Alyssa DiMaio. Two days later, the Wave defeated rival New Canaan 6-1 with Ma topping Ashley Walker 6-1, 6-2
Elizabeth Croxford, Danbury softball
Croxford threw a three-hit shutout, in a win over Fairfield Warde. The junior pitcher struck out seven batters in the Hatters 3-0 victory.
Kylee Holderied, Fairfield Ludlowe softball
The sophomore pitcher was on her game in the Falcons 12-0 win over Westhill on Saturday. Kylee threw a 2 hit shutout striking out 11 batters and improving her record to 11-3 on the season.
