Eight Fairfield County student-athletes have been nominated by our sports editors and broadcasters for the HAN-FCIAC Athletes of Week 6 of the 2017 -2018 winter sports season— sponsored by OrthoConnecticut. Check out the nominees and vote for your picks.
The week 6 winners (voting will be open until Sunday, February 18, at 11:59 pm) will be announced on Coffee Break on Monday, February 13 at 11 a.m. on HAN.Network.
The week 5 winners were Tess Stapleton of the Fairfield Ludlowe girls indoor track and field team and Jake Ritz of the New Canaan boys swimming and diving team.
HAN-FCIAC Male Athlete of the Week Nominees
Malcolm Going, Danbury boys indoor track & field
Going helped win three races for Danbury as the Hatters captured the CIAC Class LL championship in New Haven on Saturday. Going won the 600-meter run and was part of both the Hatters’ winning 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams. The 4×400 team’s time of 3:28.77 broke the Class LL record Danbury set last year, and Going was also a part of that team.
Alex Steele, Fairfield Warde wrestling
Steele was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the lighter weight classes after winning the 132-pound championship at the Joe Sikorski FCIAC Wrestling Tournament this weekend in New Canaan. Steele, the No. 2 seed, went 3-0 in the tournament and knocked off top-seeded Kyle Fields of Danbury, 5-4, in the final.
Simon Preston, Ridgefield wrestling
Preston scored three straight pinfall victories and captured the 160-pound championship at this weekend’s FCIAC wrestling tournament in New Canaan. The No. 2 seed, Preston upset top-seeded Izaake Zuckerman of Fairfield Warde, after trailing for much of the match, he won on a pin with just two seconds remaining in the second period.
Timmond Williams, Trumbull boys basketball
Timmond Williams scored 30 points in the Eagles’ huge win over Fairfield Warde on Friday 76-69. Williams also added six assists and six rebounds, as Trumbull improved to 13-3 and within two games of clinching a playoff spot.
HAN-FCIAC Female Athlete of the Week Nominees
Adnerys De Jesus, Greenwich gymnastics
De Jesus won the All-Around championship with a score of 37.65 to help lead the Greenwich Cardinals to their third consecutive FCIAC title on Saturday. The senior has been the FCIAC’s champion for three straight seasons, as she finished first in the floor exercises and vault, second on the uneven bars and fourth on the balance beam.
Ashley Wilson, Norwalk girls basketball
Ashley Wilson scored 16 points to lead the Bears to their 16th win of the season with a 56-32 victory over McMahon on Monday. Up next is the Bears’ biggest test to date this season, at Trumbull with a chance to earn the top spot in the conference.
Emily Philippides, Greenwich girls indoor track & field
Philippides had a hand in three victories as the Greenwich Cardinals won the Class LL meet for their first-ever state championship in track and field on Saturday in New Haven. Philippides was first in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:57.90, and was part of the winning 4×400 and sprint medley relay teams.
Julie Keckler, Trumbull girls basketball
Julie Keckler scored 14 points and had nine rebounds when the Eagles defeated Wilton, 59-42, on Monday. She had 10 points when Trumbull defeated Warde on Friday. Next up for Keckler is Norwalk in a game to determine the FCIAC regular season champion.
