The cold snap will help benefit a springtime tradition on the Farmington River, and you can find out more on Yankee Fisherman, presented by The Dock Shop, at a special time of Friday, Jan. 5, at 1 p.m. at HAN.network.
UPDATE: The ice fishing event scheduled for Jan. 13, discussed in this episode, has been canceled. Other fundraisers discussed are still on, and we will have updates as they become available.
Watch the show below:
An ice fishing derby is set for Saturday, Jan. 13, at Highland Lake in Winsted. The derby runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration is $20 per entry and will be capped at 100 anglers; call Larry at 860-352-2508 or T.O. at 860-585-6749. Check-in is at the state boat launch. The prize is a 50/50 for the biggest fish.
The Trophy Trout Club’s goal is to work with the Farmington River Anglers Association and merchants in the Riverton area to raise $10,000 for trophy trout for the annual children’s derby, which helps kick off trout season on the Farmy.
There will also be a pasta dinner on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 5 p.m. at the Burlington Men’s Club, 44 Covey Road, in Burlington. Tickets are $20 with a cash bar and raffles. Call Jeff Musumano at 860-836-3519.
The derby will also be affected by new regulations, which close a short stretch of the Farmington River for a few days leading up to the derby. We’ll have an update on those pending regulations.
Yankee Fisherman is hosted by John Kovach, editorial director, host and announcer for the HAN Network. A native of New Jersey, Kovach has fished since his father first took him out as a child. Kovach fishes fresh and salt water, ties flies, dabbles in lure making and promotes conservation, including a leadership role in the Connecticut Council of Trout Unlimited.
