Ryan's Rebels and boating safety

A benefit fishing tournament and a focus on boating safety are featured on Yankee Fisherman on the HAN Network Thursday, May 31, at 1 p.m. at HAN.Network.

Ryan’s Rebels, founded in memory of Ryan Joyce, will hold its second annual children’s fishing derby at Twin Brooks Park in Trumbull Saturday, June 2, from 9 a.m. to noon. There is a $5 suggested donation, and participants should take a rod and reel, but other bait, buckets and rulers will be provided.

The Memorial Day weekend was marred by tragedy on the Long Island Sound, with two people on a paddleboard missing off Groton, and a young man’s empty kayak found off Old Saybrook. All are presumed dead. We’ll revisit some boating safety discussions we’ve aired with Fairfield Police, Three Belles Outfitters and kayak anglers, hoping the tips can make a difference on the water.

Yankee Fisherman is hosted by John Kovach, editorial director, host and announcer for the HAN Network. A native of New Jersey, Kovach has fished since his father first took him out as a child. Kovach fishes fresh and salt water, ties flies, dabbles in lure making and promotes conservation, including a leadership role in the Connecticut Council of Trout Unlimited.
