The Miford Children's Trout Derby reaches a milestone, and a hurdle

The Milford Children’s Trout Derby will mark its 50th anniversary Saturday, May 5. Its future is now in jeopardy.

Watch the show below:

As Jill Dion reports in this week’s Milford Mirror, the derby needs sponsor support to survive.

The event is dedicated to one of its founders, Bob Mahoney, who died Saturday, April 28, at the age of 76. Donations in his memory may be directed to the trout derby.

With the weather warming, bass fishing is heating up and tournament trails are opening. We’ll catch up with Jamie Verab as NE Bassin enters its fourth season, and with Frank Pollifrone and Dave Sasson of the new TMFishing tour.

The Housatonic River will be the site of a boat and kayak tournament May 4-6, and will have details on Hook em on the Housy, which will be hosted out of Fisherman’s Paradise in Miford, right at the mouth of the river.

Stony Creek Brewery in Branford will present the International Fly Fishing Film Festival, hosted by Take a Vet Fishing, on Thursday, May 16. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., the film begins at 6:30. Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door. Information can be found by searching IF4 on Facebook.

Next Saturday, May 12, is a free fishing day in Connecticut. The Mianus Chapter of TU will hold its annual Family Fishing Clinic and kids trout stocking at Merwin Meadows in Wilton that day. More information can be found at mianustu.org.

Yankee Fisherman is hosted by John Kovach, editorial director, host and announcer for the HAN Network. A native of New Jersey, Kovach has fished since his father first took him out as a child. Kovach fishes fresh and salt water, ties flies, dabbles in lure making and promotes conservation, including a leadership role in the Connecticut Council of Trout Unlimited.
